Almost a year ago is when I came up with the bright ideal about the need for a chic, trendy coffee shop upon scouting out some territory in DE. I came across a listing for a space that was ideally situated in my part of town that was available to look at and so I mad a call and walked over to the location that was right in the heart of town, mind you I live in a one horse town where if you are hear longer than 6months then its like Cheers ..."where everybody knows your name" (sung in a high alto voice) ok ok..sorry back to the story ...Basically the owner of the space was already renovating this location and was only interested in renting the place to someone that was going to open a coffee shop ! Wow how ironic, I want to open a coffee shop ..so we talked numbers, history and we talked coffee because we were both coffee enthusiast !!
I am sky high & hyped as shit right now saying to myself, nah this is to easy...but I am on it!
calling the state to get information, pricing permits, getting ideals about decor, shit you can't tell me I ain't about to BLOW SHIT UP. A few days past and I am communicating with owner and arranging meetings and maybe he really didn't know how fast I move? I come from NY you gotta move fast ! so as we were talking on our next meeting we are exchanging insights and visions and a few things clashed like having a flat screen TV inside for the early morning rush with CNN running on it? he said he pictured no TV and a table with checkers on it? I'm talking artwork and photography by artist from wherever? he's talking big Texas stars on the walls with pictures of the American flag? so I am noticing a few speed bumps here and then the conversations and emails became not as frequently answered when I sent them.
Eventually we got together and after me obtaining some contracts, permits and everything that was needed to move forward I was then told that being that he basically was doing a lot of the building renovations personally it almost became his personal project, and due to his lack of time is why he needed to let go of the property but still wanted to have what he attempted to build, which was a local coffee shop and maybe at the end of the day he realized that he wanted to offer management instead of ownership? that way his vision is not lost .....
At the end of the day I understand it and it was a door that was possibly opened slightly, but when it comes to your passion and dreams you gotta do it 150% have creative control over anything that your time, effort and money is involved in!
I'm not a manager ! I'm a BOSS ...The Grand Opening of his shop was this summer and I had a cup of coffee with him the other day. Coffee was fantastic, the shop looks fantastic and my shop will also look fantastic and he will sit with me at The Java House and sip some brown stuff too when we open..
as they say ...
"Different Strokes for Different Folks"
